Failure to control diseases that have serious negative effects on livestock production and trade is a major constraint in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Not only do livestock producers suffer serious direct losses due to high mortality and severely reduced production, but the presence of serious transboundary diseases in many countries excludes them from international markets. Various factors contribute to failure to manage livestock diseases, including inability of veterinary services to apply conventional control measures, lack of field and laboratory diagnostic capacity, and serious constraints in terms of communication of information and transmission of diagnostic samples to laboratories. We can offer support for development of strategic animal disease control programmes, including the use of vaccines and other biologicals, but with particular emphasis on alternative and participatory measures, improving veterinary laboratory capacity, and outbreak investigation. We have a proud record of developing innovative strategies against important diseases in Africa. Apart from this general area we have particular internationally recognized expertise in a number of important animal diseases such as African swine fever (ASF), foot and mouth disease (FMD), rabies, rinderpest, contagious bovine pleuro-pneumonia (CBPP) and the diseases of pigs generally.
